Coat of arms

Jēkabpils coat of arms depicts a lynx in natural colours moving to the right, under a fir-tree on a silver background. The drawing of the coat of arms of Jēkabpils was adopted by the Heraldic commission on 21 November, 1924.

The said heraldic picture has its own historic background. Once upon a time Jacob, the Duke of Courland went hunting. Long he wandered through his duchy of forests, but met no game. Finally, he reached the river Daugava and saw a lynx there beneath a bushy spruce. After hunting down the lynx the Duke noticed a small town nearby.
